How exchange rate markups work
The mid-market rate
The mid-market (or interbank) rate is the "real" exchange rate — the midpoint between buy and sell prices on global currency markets. It's what you see on Google or Reuters.
What banks charge
Banks add a markup of 2–4% on top of the mid-market rate, often without showing it. On a $1,000 transfer at 3% markup, you silently lose $30 before any transfer fees.
Better alternatives
Services like Wise and Revolut use the mid-market rate and charge a small transparent fee (0–1%). For large transfers, the savings vs a bank can be significant.
Important disclaimer
Markups shown are typical estimates. Actual rates vary by amount, account type, time of day, and currency pair. Always check the live rate before transferring.
